  • What is personal care?
Personal care means anything done for you that’s of a personal nature. This may include: personal hygiene – bathing, showering, hair washing, shaving, self-pleasure, oral hygiene and nail care.
  • What is the history behind personal care?
Personal care can be traced back to 1500 B.C. when the ancient Egyptians practiced bathing regularly. The Ebers Papyrus, a medical document from about 1500 B.C describes combining animal and vegetable oils with alkaline salts to form a soap-like material used for treating skin diseases, as well as for washing.
  • What are the benefits of personal care?
Personal care is a great time for personal comfort and healing. In your free time, set an hour or two (or more!) for self-care. You deserve it.

History of Personal Care

Egyptians started taking baths regularly as early as 1500 BC, the earliest recorded personal care practice. They even had their own version of soap, which combines animal and vegetable oils with alkaline soaps. They used these to treat skin diseases and for washing.

The word ‘hygiene’ comes from the Greek goddess of health named Hygeia. She was the daughter of the god of medicine, Aesculapius. And since the Industrial Revolution and the discovery of the germ theory of disease, hygiene, and sanitation have been at the forefront of the battle against illness and diseases.

Types of Personal Care

There are three main areas of personal care: physical, psychological, and emotional. Physical personal care focuses on the body. Whether it be caring for your appearance, health, nutrition, or resting needs. Going for a walk, masturbation, taking baths, and eating well are all parts of this personal physical care.

Psychological personal care can involve learning new things, being mindful, and being creative. Meanwhile, emotional personal care can be learning about emotional literacy, navigating emotions, increasing empathy, and effectively managing stress. Saying no and making time for yourself are great starts to personal emotional care.

Benefits of Personal Care

Life puts so much pressure on people as individuals. Working, keeping up relationships, and other responsibilities can take a toll – especially if you don’t know how and when to reset and restart. By indulging in self-care, you can lift some of the pressure on your shoulders for even a few minutes.
