Personal care

Caring for our surroundings and bodies are one of the primary elements to personal or self care. Personal care is the act of engaging in activities to gain or maintain an optimal level of overall health.

No matter the situation, caring for yourself is key to maintaining a clean body and healthy life. You could perform self-care in various ways. You can take time cleansing your body, indulging in your sensual pleasures, or if you need some personal grooming done, you could have DIY waxing at home. Whichever way, self-care is a great time for personal comfort and healing. In your free time, set an hour or two (or more!) for self-care. You deserve it.

  • What is personal care?
Personal care means anything done for you that’s of a personal nature. This may include: personal hygiene – bathing, showering, hair washing, shaving, self-pleasure, oral hygiene and nail care.
  • What is the history behind personal care?
Personal care can be traced back to 1500 B.C. when the ancient Egyptians practiced bathing regularly. History of Personal Care

Personal care dates back to 1500 B.C. when the ancient Egyptians practiced bathing regularly.

The Ebers Papyrus, a medical document from about 1500 B.C describes combining animal and vegetable oils with alkaline salts to form a soap-like material used for treating skin diseases, as well as for washing. The word hygiene comes from Hygeia, the Greek goddess of health, who was the daughter of Aesculapius, the god of medicine. Since the arrival of the Industrial Revolution (c.1750-1850) and the discovery of the germ theory of disease in the second half of the nineteenth century, hygiene and sanitation have been at the forefront of the struggle against illness and disease.

Main Types of Personal Care

There are 3 main areas of personal care: physical, psychological, and emotional.

Physical personal care involves the movement of the body, health, nutritional and resting needs. Some examples of this are going for a walk, self pleasure, taking a bath, getting rest and eating healthy food. Psychological self-care involves learning new things, practicing mindfulness and creativity. Some examples of psychological personal care are practicing mindfulness, reading a book or learning a new skill. And lastly, emotional self-care which involves enhancing emotional literacy, navigating emotions, increasing empathy and managing stress effectively. Some examples of emotional self-care are saying no, making time for reflecting on feelings, practicing self-compassion and being aware of your emotional boundaries

Benefits of Personal Care

In a society in which people are expected to work long hours and pass on vacation days, there is an underlying belief that we must always be productive – which can ultimately take away from opportunities for self-care.

But by taking some time out to engage in self-care, you may relieve the pressures of everyday life and reset yourself to get back to a healthy point where productivity is once again maximized. Considering the costs associated with mental health services, lost wages and more, spending some time on yourself may ultimately benefit everyone. Burning the candle at both ends, so-to-speak, comes with significant consequences, which may include but are not limited to burnout, depression, anxiety, resentment and a whole host of other negative implications. Engaging in a self-care routine has been clinically proven to reduce or eliminate anxiety and depression, reduce stress, improve concentration, minimize frustration and anger, increase happiness, improve energy, and more.
